Museum Dr Ghuislain is a museum and a psychiatric centre. It is housed in the oldest mental asylum in Belgium, still functioning today, and aims to break down the many prejudices that still define what is ‘mentally ill’ and what is ‘normal’. They do this by assembling their own collection of outsider art or art brut, they host shows on contemporary human themes and have a permanent collection on the history of psychiatry.
If you would like to go swimming when you are in the city, this is the place to be! It is a 20 minute drive from the center of the town. Set in the natural area of Deinze it features outdoor swimming and a little cafe where you can grab a drink and a bite. It is an old-fashioned place where grandmothers play cards and has flemish feel to it. The surroundings are great for walking, so get out and explore!
This is my absolute favourite restaurant in town. But then again I have to correct myself; it's not merely a restaurant. It is a pizzeria, a bakery, a brunch place, coffee bar and a fine-dining restaurant all in one. It is casually cozy while it offers great food. Set around a magnificent wood oven this restaurant by star chef Kobe Desramaults is truly a gem!
If the city has been enough, grab your bike and head of to some of the beautiful natural areas surrounding Ghent. By following the water you can ride a beautiful bike-ride to the Gentbrugse Meersen and take in some fresh air!
