Tynemouth is 20 minutes from the city on the metro. It also has a great antique and farmer’s market at the weekend in the metro station. But the main draw of Tynemouth is the first of a beautiful stretch of sandy beaches which are never crowded. It reminds me of Australia. All the dogs look so shiny eyed and happy. How did they keep this place such a secret?

Katie Goodwin is a fine artist who mainly works in moving image. She recently completed a Masters of Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art and currently is exhibiting in New Contemporaries at the ICA in London. She has lived most of her adult life in London, UK and Sydney, Australia, but loves living in Newcastle, because not only is it really affordable and easy to get around by bicycle, it’s got a bit of everything - great markets, architecture, beaches, culture, and also the local Geordies are just so friendly.

Newcastle / Museum

The Baltic is the north east’s equivalent to the Tate Modern. A grandiose 4 storey white cube gallery in an old flour mill. They are currently exhibiting the Turner Prize which has meant queuing like they’ve never seen it before up here on the opening night. It is also one of the main reasons why this at times struggling city seems to have a more positive future. Proof that the arts does help make life and the economy better.

Newcastle / Cafe

Olive & Bean a cafe and deli simply do the best food ever. Great homemade soup and amply filled baguettes with their so good they can’t be good for you salads - my favourite Roast Chicken & Avocado & Mango Chutney Salad I have at least once a week. Great place for detox and instant retox with the best carrot cake and brownie chunky slices ever.

Newcastle / Cinema

Probably the best independent cinema in the UK. Built in 1937 it still has loads of art deco features. There is free tour every morning where you can see an original Newsreel in the beautiful Classic cinema. It also has all the mod-cons of a 21st century cinema with 4 screens, comfy seats and you can get a bottle of wine to drink whilst the film is on - so civilised.

Newcastle / Library

The Lit & Phil is a library pretty much unmodernised since it was first built in 1825. It has a wonderful reading room and a tunnel between it and the equally stunning Mining Institute next door. Many great speakers and thinkers have past through these doors including amongst many others John Betjeman & Oscar Wilde. Maybe some of that greatness will rub off on me if I spend enough time amongst the dusty books....
