Jos Buivenga can be passionate about a lot of things. He loves to paint, listen to music, brew an almost perfect espresso… but nothing challenges and rewards him more than designing type. If ever he was stranded on a desert island he would still draw alphabets in the sand, even if there was no one else to see them. He is the founder of exljbris, the one-man Dutch font foundry through which he releases and offers his typefaces. For 15 years, his online friends and fans could follow the development of his typefaces and download the results at no cost. In 2008, while still working as an art director at an advertising agency, he released his first commercial typeface Museo with several weights offered for free. That strategy paid off and Museo became a huge bestseller. Partly thanks to that success he now calls himself a full time type designer. All photos by Jos van Roij

The main (and only) shopping street of Neede has a quirky mix of abandoned spots and lively shops.

Near Neede - in Borculo- there is this former oil mill dating back from 1375. One of my favorite restaurants nearby.

Northwest of Neede you can find the remains of a swimming pool which is now part of a nature area. The diving board serves as a viewing point.

North of Neede lies a beautiful, gently sloping landscape shaped 150.000 years ago by an ice age. Great place to cycle or walk.

My name is Lavinia and I am a jewellery maker based in Florence and temporarily living in Shanghai doing an artist residency. I’m fascinated by the artificial or natural patterns i see around me and my pieces emerge through the repetition of elements, as combined with three fundamental aspects which dialogue together: movement, flexibility and weight.

Julien Renault grew up outside of Paris and attended design schools both in France (Reims School of Art and Design) and in Switzerland (ECAL). Two different cultures and approaches to design which have partly shaped Renault’s own way of addressing his work. Marta Sasinowska is a designer and photographer, curator and event coordinator based in Chicago. She’s also the founder of Practice Studies, where she documents artists and makers and their creative processes as she travels the world. Instead of focusing on the final product, she focuses on highlighting the “ways to get there,” showing how much work goes into each handmade piece. She’s driven by the idea of connecting, sharing and building community bound by creative passions.
