The best place to see a dramatic sunset is right by Valentino Pier in my neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn. This was right after a storm. It’s wild and brilliant and peaceful all at once.

Jade Doskow is a photographer and professor based out of Brooklyn, New York. She shoots with a large-format technical camera and is especially drawn to antiquated utopian architecture. Recent projects include an investigation of the remaining sites and structures of world’s fair sites internationally. Jade is a contributing photography blogger for the Huffington Post. She has her MFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York and is represented by Wall Space Gallery in Santa Barbara, California. She lives and works out of Red Hook, Brooklyn, with her husband, the painter Lambert Fernando and their son Benjamin.

New York / Restaurant

The oldest still-operating restaurant in New York City, still in the family of the original founders. At Christmastime, it's decorated to the nines. Go with a big group: portions are large and the wine flows liberally. Look for the little buttons on the walls: in the old days, the mafia would hang out in the back room, and if diners saw the cops come in, they'd press the buttons so the mafia guys could run out the back.

I have been getting burgers here since I first moved to NYC. I think it is 1000 years old or something like that. Only two types of burgers, with or without bacon. I like easy decisions and this place is full of them. There is usually a line to be seated, but it always seems to go fast with $2.50 mugs of McSorley's. It's also at this strange vortex in the west village where 4th street and 12th street cross. Maybe that's why the line never takes too long and everything is so cheap.

Printed Matter—organizer of the NY and LA Art Book Fairs—is a non-profit supporting the work of artists and independent publishers through the circulation of their books. At their store in Chelsea, you can shop an insanely diverse selection of artists’ books, zines, posters, and more. They’re also always hosting awesome in-store exhibitions and events, from book launches and talks to lectures and performances.

A gorgeous place to wander and explore, especially during cherry blossom season when the colonnade of soft pink cherry trees are in full bloom on the esplanade. I’m also a big fan of the tropical and desert gardens.
