The best place to see a dramatic sunset is right by Valentino Pier in my neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn. This was right after a storm. It’s wild and brilliant and peaceful all at once.

Jade Doskow is a photographer and professor based out of Brooklyn, New York. She shoots with a large-format technical camera and is especially drawn to antiquated utopian architecture. Recent projects include an investigation of the remaining sites and structures of world’s fair sites internationally. Jade is a contributing photography blogger for the Huffington Post. She has her MFA in photography from the School of Visual Arts in New York and is represented by Wall Space Gallery in Santa Barbara, California. She lives and works out of Red Hook, Brooklyn, with her husband, the painter Lambert Fernando and their son Benjamin.

New York / Bar

This is one of my favorite bars in Manhattan. It has a courtyard in the middle and they only serve a large selection of Belgian beer. It's always dark with red lights so it's like a giant darkroom with everyone developing hangovers instead of film. The courtyard creates a front bar that is open on the weekends, so if you get cornered talking about architecture you can escape over to the front bar and watch people walk down 4th street.

where I walk with my dog near my apartment, is also the remains of what was Fort Putnam in the late 1700’s and later Fort Washington near the Navy Yard. Not the largest park but a regular part of my routine and big enough to feel like you’re still out of the city when you’re in the middle of it.

Always beautifully curated shows in a whitewashed space. The work is juxtaposed with the bustling China Town backdrop, adding a dose of life and grit compared to the other often hyper sterile art spaces around the world.

This outpost of Seattle coffee is an excellent place to get your morning cappuccino, afternoon macchiato, or just some beans to take home. I lived in Seattle for 6 years before moving to New York and at first I was afraid the coffee here wouldn’t measure up, but lucky for me there are plenty of great places. Picking a favorite wasn’t easy!
