Manila / Restaurant

Toyo is one of my favorite restaurants in Manila. The shop is in the same compound as my studio, so I always bring my visiting friends here for dinner. The ambience is nice and the food is really really good. It's Filipino food in its essence, but done very differently.

Manila / Art

A dedicated space in Manila for contemporary art galleries, institutions, shops, restaurants, cafes and a design studio, along a wide, shaded garden hallway, The Alley is a quiet and relaxed place where you can sit outside from afternoon to evening over coffee and wine, catch a show, put up a show, meet a friend.

Rikuzentakata / Hotel

It's rare for tourists to go to the Tohoku (Northeast) Region of Japan except for Sendai (the capital). I've been there a couple of times for a design residency. It's good to use Rikuzentakata as the base. I highly recommend Hakoneyama Terrace. It has a nice view, they serve good food and the accommodation is good.

Tokyo / Cafe

This is my favorite go-to coffee shop in Tokyo. It's in a quiet and quaint space. I recommend trying their coffee and muffins. It's also right across a park and playground.

São Paulo / Artist

Camila Pinheiro is a brazilian artist based in São Paulo. "The appealing use of clean lines, negative space and tropical colours in Camila Pinheiro's distinctive illustrations hint at the Brazilian artist's South American roots and high fashion background. She began her career studying fashion in São Paulo, before landing a job with Dior and then as a "cool hunter" for a range of brands. It was during that stint that she realised she wanted to know more about the branding behind the luxury labels, and that's when she decided to become a designer and illustrator. After a little more studying under her belt, she worked for various branding agencies for six years and then decided to launch her own studio. Everything she produces has to have a narrative, a habit she developed in the marketing industry. Her influences range from Magritte, Matisse and Mondrian to Alexander Girard and Michael Roberts." Since graduating from Staffordshire University last year he has gained recognition from a variety of design publications, including Wallpaper*, Digital Arts and the London Design Festival. In 2011 Ben was awarded a D&AD Best New Blood and an ISTD membership for his typography. He is currently doing illustration work for Penguin Books.
