About marina
At the intersection of fashion, photography, film, stagecraft, and design, artist Marina Fini creates hallucinatory, alternative worlds. Based in California, she collaborates with friends and artists alike in the staging of these otherworldly scenes, using colorful costumes and her own handmade, plexiglass jewelry to turn her photographic subjects into ethereal cyber goddesses. When asked how she builds these characters, Fini remarked, “there’s something about transforming someone into someone they wouldn’t normally be … that is, creating an extension of themselves that I see in them.” All of her characters exude a captivating power, like the whimsical and intangible figures seen through a psychedelic dream. By exploring alternative selves in familiar contexts – a convenience store, or the Californian seaside, for example – Fini explores how subjecthood is fluid, and how such creative “shape-shifting” can alter the way we perceive our immediate reality.

Thomas Friedrich Schaefer had the opportunity to observe different social and familial environments within distinct communities. Since moving back to Germany, he has tried to assess his memories and his past within his images. He recently finished a long-term photographic project creating and documenting elaborately staged environments that play on the essence of fragmented childhood memories. The project required him to construct staged rooms using technical skills which he obtained early in his studies while studying architecture and engineering. Thomas continues to stage images in his studio in Berlin. His work includes hyper-realistic sets that provide the narrative framework to moments of interpersonal relationship. What seem like irrelevant and forgettable moments take on an importance and poignancy.

Alnis Stakle is a photography-based artist from Daugavpils, Latvia. He holds PhD in art education from Daugavpils University. Besides being artist, he teaches photojournalism and creative photography at Daugavpils University and Riga Stradins University. Since 2011 year he works on a project “Not Even Something” that is a research on the interstices in the city environment. Even though these interstices cover small territories, they are always intended for traversing rather than staying. No one wishes to linger there, because they are an intermediate between home and work, between one living space and another. These spaces are located between the meaningful and the meaningful, and themselves remain in the field of the insignificant and inessential. These are the places where we feel no desire to be in just like that, because with their aura of insignificance they not only make us feel as outsiders, but even “push” us away.
