Hsiao-Ron Cheng is a Taiwanese illustrator living in Taipei, Taiwan. She attended Taiwan University of Art from 2007-2010, receiving her BFA in Fine Art. Her work alludes to the deformation that physically separates human from plants. The environments and situations that she paints are often of surrealist nature, reminiscent of school, and partly based on phantasy.

While I am in Taipei, Taipei Fine Art Museum is one of the places that I go most frequently. Well, not only because it’s not far from where I live by scooter, but also because it’s really cheap! (The entrance fee is about 60p.) And, of course, despite the political scandal, the exhibitions are always diverse and interesting, and it has great library in the basement. On top of that, after my solo show, some of the staffs and I became friends. So, 60p for great exhibitions, free books and hanging out with friends, why not?

The owner is only 29 years old, who had a dream of having a shop selling everything, so he started saving money since 15. It certainly brought a new atmosphere to the area, where is known for financial centre. Since the owner was a bartender at a famous bar in Taipei, don’t forget to order a customized cocktail not on the menu!

It might be a bit exaggerated to compare it with central park, but it is also a green space in the city centre. (Just a bit smaller.) It’s around my neighborhood, again, so I have a lot of childhood memories with it. I remember teachers from elementary school always brought us there, for field trip, which is only one block away. And I also had my graduation photos taken there. Nowadays, I go back for jogging often.
