In the ever growing conservative political scene in the Netherlands, the ADM is a reminder of the freedom and chaos that Amsterdam must have once been. It gives me my dose of dirty grittiness, something which is miss in this city in constant renovation and gentrification. Evolving around a main building on an industrial shipyard on the outskirts of town, it's an area where modern gypsies, anarchists, artists and free thinkers build their houses, park their caravans or dock their house boats. It's not entirely my scene, but I am happy to know that it's there. And they throw some amazing festivals!

Lost & Found is a monthly artist salon held in one of the medieval towers of the Waag on the Nieuwmarkt. In the room where Rembrandt's 'The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp' once took place have since 1997 over 80 sessions of stray images and sound been organized. Artists show material which doesn't fit comfortably into regular gallery contexts; work which demands more concentration than the usual walk-by. Check the Lost & Found website for dates & times.

OT301 is a cultural centre in the former building of the Film Academy at the Overtoom. It’s a good place to get drunk, watch a movie or to eat. It's not too expensive, like most other places in Amsterdam, and the ambience is good. 


The Bartolotti is perhaps one of the most beautiful Museum Houses Amsterdam has, built by someone who once was the richest man in the city, but it's a bit hidden in plain sight. These days, it is run by a group of lovely old ladies, who can't wait to offer you tea or juice. You can walk around the house like you live there. You have to ring the doorbell to get in. This image I had discovered on a regular visit to the Huis van Marseille. Photographers typically gravitate towards Fotografie Museum Amsterdam (FOAM), but the House from Marseille always has gems.
