As London’s oldest food market, Borough Market has been serving the people of Southwark for 1,000 years. Located next to London Bridge, the market is an easy location for breakfast or lunch. Favourite is Börek with home made hummus or a freshly made pasta dish.

Classic, wood-panelled boozer with banquettes and bar stools, plus a pool table. Situated close to Goldsmiths, University of London. Vibe: Art School meets Football Fan meets Mark E Smith.

One or two screenings a day, a few days a week; less is more at Close Up. The library is a great resource too, for work or pleasure.

Get on the list for tickets and surprise someone who will appreciate the 'village of books' upstairs in particular.

Having spent many years studying there, I have a soft spot for Central Saint Martins, which finally closed in September 2011 when the college relocated to Kings Cross. Despite being such a dive, the old building had such history and character and I grew very fond of its tatty charms. As plans for its take over by Foyles bookshop go ahead, I look forward to having a coffee in the new building's cafe when it re-opens.
