Dutch born photographer Gijs van der Most is based in Los Angeles. Since he switched Amsterdam for Los Angeles about two years ago, he’s been quickly becoming a favorite in the downtown Los Angeles photography scene. Gijs’ photography is direct, personal, and sometimes with a little wink. He’s fascinated by people, their behavior and their environment. His documentary projects include “Used Car Salesmen”, “Yard Sales”, “Sign Jugglers”, and his most recent project ” I ♥ Runyon Canyon”. Even though Van der Most works are displayed in series, he doesn’t waste a single image. Gijs has co-created the blog “van der THIS! “, with his comedian/writer wife Michelle Buteau fusing the photography and comedy world into a miniseries that is eye catching as well as entertaining. I grew up a few blocks from the "New Bev", the oldest revival house in Los Angeles. I was there every week in High School and watched everything from Deep End to Wings of Desire. It's no wonder I departed from mainstream cinema, early on. One night towards the end of High School, I went to see a film and wound up talking to this loud and wacky man who told me he had a film coming out called "Reservoir Dogs". Now he now is part owner. These days I go to the New Beverly for their Midnight movies and even had the chance to screen my own film there which was one of the greatest feelings in the world.

Yes- I'm going to anger some people by sharing this hidden gem with you. It is very special and I expect hate mail. They have been serving Japanese comfort food since the late 60's and is the last gasp of a neighborhood in Boyle Heights that was once predominantly Japanese. No frills. Just a warm and loving environment- a place to escape and eat spicy tuna rice bowls and sip miso with your Japanese Grandmother. Shhh, don't tell anyone.
